Booking Through Thursday-Book Clubs

  1. No one has invited me to one either, but I don't particularly care as I don't personally know anyone in a book club and all the other avid readers I know aren't part of one.

  2. Why do I think (hope?) #10 is the only serious answer? Because none of those other things are necessarily true. For example, when my old book club of Wellesley College alums met in our tony Boston apartments to read best sellers and rag on men, we only drank sparkling seltzer, thank you very much! ;-)

  3. Aw, if that's true of all the book clubs near you, how sad! I've heard better ones about others. I don't think I'd join the type you describe, I am still interested in one in general though.

  4. I loved this post! Your tone is so wonderfully dry and snarky -- Thank you for such an original and quirky take on something that we tend to take all too seriously... :)

  6. I must remember not to be drinking when I read your posts. Now I have to clean my screen and desk of tea spatter. Good answers!

  12. Wow, I don't even know WHAT to say! Maybe you'll get invited one of these days, and will give it a try and guess what? You'll love it! :)

  15. Ditto on #1 and #4 haha. Happy BTT! :D

I'm happy with the books I read and talking about it occasionally with my friends. I haven't encountered a worthwhile book club here in my local shores.

  16. Hey hey hey! A best seller once in a while can actually have something to say! Either way, yes, meeting strangers online (and in person) is much better than the stereotypical book club that only reads one type of book and has people of all the same ideas, morals and opinions.

  17. LOL - great post. And in complete agreement with your comment on mine, as well - this online route is much better! (And dare I be the first American to laugh heartily at #9?!?)

  18. Now, I feel so *uncool* for not having more clever answers.

  19. All good reasons to me for not joining :) Although I don't know about the wife, but certainly the husband's restoration obsession would throw me: could not chissel away one night a month now could I? My nails would go to pieces for one and I would be cranky for days about having missed my bookblog! By the way, your link did not work on your message on my blog, so have found you now and will add you to the blogroll :)

  20. Way back when, when I was in school, I hated the part of English class where we had to analyze books. I frequently enjoyed the book on first reading and by the time we were done with it in English class, hated it.

Therefore, I don't join book clubs!

  21. Wow. That doesn't even come close to describing my book club. For starters, we avoid most best-sellers. Perhaps having a content theme to our choices helps, but we've uncovered some phenomenal books we'd have otherwise missed.

Second, we don't serve wine, nor get tipsy. My group's a coffee-drinking group. We've all got to get home, whether or not we're the drivers.

Third, as the leader, I'm the only one who prepares, and then only marginally. I'll spend a few minute googling the author and see what I can find. I've made some very cool contacts.

Fourth, we only meet every few weeks, and around our schedules. It's not uncommon for us to spend ten minutes with our PDAs and purse calendars and organizers, discussing which dates work for whom and who's got theater that night and a board meeting this night. If we wind up scheduling our next meeting for eight weeks away, so be it. We meet when we can.

Maybe you ought to join us one week. You might be surprised at what you see.

  22. I *chuckle* over #6! I just think you need to find the right bookclub for you. And maybe...you just haven't found one yet *shrug*. But I chuckle over all your list, just remind me not to be drinking the next time I read your post...a spew of liquid on the monitor is no no...LOL !Now I must go a wipe it off and clean it after a clever post *grin*

Thanks for visiting my blog, I hope you stop by again soon. Have a good weekend ahead!

  25. LOL I love your response. I'm not sure I would want to be a part of the group you've just described either.

  26. Reason #1 is more than enough for me to stay away from book club.

  27. LOL, I loved #6. I admit I am in a book club but it is a very fun group of family members. We have 3generations of women in our group. We do drink wine but never bash men in our group. I don't think that would go over really well. Oh and I also loved #9!
